This one-day instructional tour focuses on how to travel safely in the winter mountain environment. We offer hands-on training using avalanche transceivers, snow-pit analysis, uphill track setting and technique, and terrain assessment. You can extend the educational experience into another day tour or schedule a private overnight hut trip for your small group.

Enjoy three days in the mountains under our exclusive and personal attention to learn new skills. Cost includes all meals starting with lunch on the first day through lunch on the third day, avalanche transceiver rental, sleeping bag rental and porter to carry in supplies. Small group size, a fully field-based course with two nights spent in the yurt in the wilderness make for a great educational weekend getaway.
Senior NOLS Instructor Tony Jewel will be administering this course. Tony has taught avalanche classes to hundreds of NOLS students as well as professional avalanche courses to NOLS winter staff along with numerous regional recreational Level 1 courses. Tony holds a Level 3 Avalanche Certification and has completed Level 1 and Level 2 Instructor Training Courses with the American Institute for Avalanche Education and Research (AIARE). He is a professional member of the American Avalanche Association (AAA), a highly-esteemed designation for avalanche professionals showing significant experience. Tony greatly enjoys sharing his knowledge and insights about avalanches and to help others in assessing and making good decisions in avalanche terrain.
