4-DAY CAMP: Join Teton Backcountry Guides senior mountain guide and American Avalanche Association’s Kate Koons for an inspirational and supportive backcountry skills camp. Camp is limited to six women with two female guides ensuring plenty of individualized instruction.
Learn the art and sport of backcountry skiing and riding in a relaxed and supportive group setting. Camp will focus on backcountry safety, mountain travel, and powder technique. Our first day’s outing will take us to Teton Pass to seek out the perfect terrain and snow conditions to practice our skills and technique. On day two, we’ll skin in to our Plummer Canyon Yurt for a 3-day/2-night backcountry adventure with slopeside lodging at 8,700 feet. By day, we’ll explore the area’s best backcountry lines and by evening you can take in the alpenglow while sipping your favorite beverage, then retire by the wood-burning stove for a home-cooked meal. Trip includes porters carry in food to keep your pack light, rental of avalanche safety equipment and sleeping bag.
Backcountry Skills Camp will focus on route-finding and navigation skills, snow stability, weather, rescue, what to carry in your pack, nutrition, and powder skiing technique. Participants must be in good physical and cardiovascular condition, have solid downhill ability, and be able to hike and ski four to five miles in a day. No avalanche education necessary.
Learn how to use climbing skins, learn efficient uphill travel techniques, learn efficient transition skills, learn the skills needed to descend powder and variable terrain. In addition, participants will learn about routefinding, how to make a tour plan, what is needed in your backpack for touring, how to use an avalanche transciever and other rescue items along with learning how to look at the mountains with “avalanche eyes”
